How to Wash Oversized T-Shirts Without Shrinking: The Complete Care Guide.
Your premium heavyweight tee is an investment. Here's exactly how to wash, dry, and store it so it keeps its perfect boxy shape for years.

You just invested in a premium 240 GSM heavyweight boxy tee. The fit is perfect, the drape is immaculate, and you feel like a million bucks. Then you throw it in the washing machine with everything else, blast it on high heat, and three washes later — it's a shrunken, warped shadow of its former self. Don't be that person. Here's exactly how to care for your oversized tees.
Rule #1: Cold Water Only
This is the single most important rule. Always wash in cold water (30°C or below). Hot water is the #1 cause of cotton shrinkage. When cotton fibers are exposed to heat, they contract and tighten, physically pulling the garment smaller. Cold water cleans just as effectively without triggering this shrinkage response.
At ZWARTO, we pre-shrink our 240+ GSM cotton using a bio-wash process during manufacturing, which significantly reduces the risk of further shrinkage. But cold water is still the safest practice to preserve the structured boxy fit.
Rule #2: Turn It Inside Out
Before tossing your oversized tee into the machine, flip it inside out. This protects the outer surface — including any prints, embroidery, or puff graphics — from friction damage caused by rubbing against other clothes and the drum of the washing machine. It also prevents color fading on the visible face of the fabric.
Rule #3: Gentle Cycle, Not Normal
Use the gentle or delicate cycle on your washing machine. The normal cycle uses aggressive agitation that can warp the shape of a structured boxy tee over time. The gentle cycle uses less mechanical action while still cleaning effectively.
If you're hand-washing, don't wring or twist the fabric. Gently squeeze out excess water instead. Wringing stretches the fibers and destroys the drop shoulder construction.
Rule #4: Never Use the Dryer
Air dry only. Always. The tumble dryer is the second biggest killer of oversized tees (after hot water). The combination of heat and tumbling causes severe shrinkage and can permanently warp the boxy silhouette.
The best method: lay the t-shirt flat on a clean, dry towel or hang it on a wide, padded hanger (not a thin wire one). Hanging on a thin hanger can create "shoulder bumps" that distort the drop shoulder seam. If drying on a clothesline, hang by the hem, not the shoulders.
Rule #5: Store Folded, Not Hung
For long-term storage, fold your heavyweight tees rather than hanging them. Heavyweight cotton is dense — if left on a hanger for weeks, gravity slowly stretches the shoulders and neckline. Folding preserves the engineered proportions of the garment.
"A ₹999 tee that lasts 3 years is an investment. Treat it like one."
Quick Reference Cheat Sheet
✅ Do: Cold water, gentle cycle, inside out, air dry flat, fold for storage
❌ Don't: Hot water, normal cycle, tumble dryer, thin wire hangers, bleach
Follow these five rules and your ZWARTO heavyweight tee will maintain its perfect boxy shape, vibrant color, and structured drape for years — getting softer and more comfortable with every wash while keeping its form intact.
